Hello from the 2014 Cleveland Indians Fantasy Camp in sunny Goodyear, AZ! The opening banquet last night at the hotel felt like a family reunion with so many veteran campers and pros on hand. A terrific group of rookies and favorite fans, too!
Camp Manager Rick Manning was in great form. Arch and his fellow pros ramped it up right away. Rookie pro Jaret Wright said he couldn’t wait to drill a camper. Incredibly, during the camper introductions, several said they wanted him to. Indians video team crew chief Mike Symonds thrilled the crowd with ‘walk-off finish’ highlights from the Tribe’s 2013 season.
Bob DiBiasio, Indians Sr. VP, Public affairs, was introduced as the new camp commissioner. Bobby D announced a new LCS playoff format that will see half of the camp alive on Thursday morning to win the Cleveland Indians Fantasy Camp World Series. Details to appear in Monday’s edition of Smoke Signals.
The campers arrived at the Indians spring training and player development complex for the first time this morning. Rookie and veterans alike, enjoyed that special moment of seeing their uniform hanging in their locker with their authentic Indians nameplate above.
After a tasty breakfast, it was time for bat selection, stretching and instructional clinics. Batting practice is happening right now. After lunch and the afternoon intra-squad games, it will be time for the draft. Campers and pros will then enjoy team dinners before heading to the opening session of Kangaroo Kourt, presided by Judge Gary Bell.
