Hello again from beautiful Goodyear, AZ on Day 1 at the Player Development Complex and Spring Training home of the Cleveland Indians! I’m Denny Linden, and it is my pleasure to post the daily happenings at the 2015 Cleveland Indians Fantasy Camp. I will also be posting Smoke Signals, the daily camp newspaper. You can also follow me on Twitter @IndiansFC.
After a fun opening cocktail reception and welcome banquet last night at the Glendale Renaissance hotel, it is time for baseball.
Under sunny blue skies with warming temperatures that will top out at 75 degrees, the campers and pros look crisp in their uniforms. Of the 97 campers, 64 are vets with 44 back from 2014. Ken Seelie and Steve Sutker are back for their 19th consecutive year, followed by Greg VanValkenburgh for his 18th. Wow!
Among the rookies is Frank Durkalski, his son Court, and his grandson Trevor. Three generations – a fantasy camp first. Another first is the Morgan family – returning vets Jack and Renea brought their daughter Erica and son Aaron, to make it the first mother-daughter combination to take the field.
Sharing fantasy camp with family is a special joy for those who can. Enjoying that experience are Jeremy & Scott Bilsky; Marty & Matt Cole; Dave & Marc Gutin; Dee & Steve Lab; Bill, Frank, & Mike Maire, Tim & Vic Murdock; Bill, Chris, & Dave Schubert; David & Mark Shipps; George & Will Soos; Josh & Tim Sorge; Chad & Dave Tracy; David & Seth Willen; and Brian & Paul Woodard. The Indians vision is about creating memories, connecting generations, and celebrating families. For these 13 families, this week promises to be extra special.
After lunch, the campers will play intra-squad games under the watchful eyes of the pros and pro assistants. The draft follows. After that closed-door session, the teams will be announced at the hotel. Each team will then enjoy dinner together.
Today’s activities will conclude tonight at the hotel with the first-ever Trivia Night, beginning at 8:30.
